Lake Atitlan - Retreat

Cojol ya - Santiago Atitlan

Featured in Architectural Digest

Imagine yourself in an exotic Paradise of flowers and trees, on the shore of one of the world's most beautiful mountain lakes, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. I am Candis Krummel and my home, the last of traditional Tzutujil Mayan architecture still in existence in Santiago Atitlan, was featured in the August 2002 issue of Archtitectural Digest. In addition to the unique guest rooms, the site is powered with solar energy and a windmill for pumping water, so visiting here is also an oppportunity to experience an ecological lifestyle.

Guest Suite has two traditionally thatched rooms

Cojol ya is located near Santiago Atitlan and can be reached via boat from Panachel or bus from Guatemala City. Private vans are also available for hire to bring you here from Guatemala City or Antigua.
I can sleep up to four people, with two sharing a bed in the Guest Suite.
The Guest Suite has two traditionally thatched rooms, connected by a glass-enclosed patio. In the patio is a hot rain-shower. One room is the sleeping room and the other a small sitting room. The room is a study in rustic elegance, furnished with handmade mahogony furniture and antiques, and decorated with textiles woven by the Cojol ya Association.
The Gate House sleeps two in twin beds and also has hot running water, with an outdoor shower. This room is a cozy, traditional bungalow decorated with textiles woven on the backstrap loom.

Visitors are welcome for a minimum of two nights

Visitors are welcome for a minimum of two nights ...special arrangements could be made for stays of longer than a week.

$55 single, $70 double per night

Guests enjoy our shade-grown, organic coffee, toasted over an open fire, delivered to their rooms upon arising. A hearty breakfast is included in the cost per night. Other meals can be arranged....they are gourmet quality, accompanied by wine and made with ingredients from my organic garden. You will want to sip my pitaya wine (made from a cactus fruit) while watching the sunset from the roof terrace.
My visitors are pampered guests, enjoying the beauty and tranquility of this unique retreat.
Guests can enjoy guided walks to unexcavated archeological sites, take the row boat on the lake to watch the water birds nesting in the reeds at dusk, swim in the clear waters of the lake, sail and visit the Weaving Center of the Cojol ya Association to learn about backstrap weaving and meet the weavers.

Bird watching, swimming, hiking/walking..

My visitors have been intellectually stimulating people who have an interest in traditional Maya culture, architecture, textiles, bird-watching, organic gardening, appropriate technology, swimming and hiking/walking. They should like pets, as I have dogs and cats. Smokers have to smoke outside.

Cojol ya Association for Maya Women Weavers

I have lived on the Island of Cojol ya (3km from the village of Santiago Atitlan) for 25 years. During that time, I founded the Cojol ya Association for Maya Women Weavers, my effort to help preserve the exquisite traditional art of backstrap loom weaving. The Association's textiles have achieved international acclaim and our client list includes Michael Graves, Takashimaya NY and Simon Pearce plus many famous interior designers. Please visit our web site at www.cojolya.org
Visitors should have reasonable physical stamina. My site cannot accommodate people with severe disabilities. The altitude here is over a mile high; the weather is cool at night and hot during the day. The nights are dark, surfaces are uneven and there is no medivac helicopter!
